All Philadelphia Dance Academy ballet students age 8 and older have the opportunity to audition for our annual production of the Nutcracker. They may choose to audition for The Nutcracker and not for the Philadelphia Youth Ballet.

Most Nutcracker rehearsals are held on Saturday afternoons (typically between 1p – 4p) from late September through mid –December. As the show approaches we will have an occasional Sunday afternoon rehearsal in December. Students may not miss more than 2 rehearsals.

Nutcracker Auditions:

Saturday, September 7:
10:00 am - 11:00 am: 5 – 7 years old
11:00 am - 12:00 pm: 8 – 11 years old
12:00 pm - 1:00 pm: 12 years old and older

Nutcracker Performances: TBA

Community Events and Festivals

PYB performs regularly in Philadelphia and the surrounding community.
Recent performances have included:

  • Franklin Square Mother’s Day Brunch
  • The Piazza in Northern Liberties
  • Valentine’s Day at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia
  • Headhouse Square Winter Wonderland
  • Dancers4Dimes Benefit Performance for March of Dimes
  • Midtown Village Fall Festival

They have participated in lecture demonstrations at St. Peter’s School, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and Barnes & Noble - Rittenhouse. 
PYB members perform annually at Little Friends of Rittenhouse Square Festival.

Spring Repertoire Performance

PYB will hold a spring performance of both classical and contemporary repertoire on Sunday, March 17, 2013.  This year’s show will feature a collaboration with guest choreographers from Drexel University Dance Department.

The company's 1st Annual Spring Concert was on Sunday, March 11, 2012 at Christ Church Neighborhood House, 20 North American Street, Philadelphia, PA. See the show poster for more details.

Collaborative Projects

Drexel University – PYB members will audition to be part of works choreographed by guest choreographers from Drexel University. Works will be presented in the March Spring Repertoire performance.

Play on Philly and Live Connections – PYB Senior ensemble will partner with young musicians from Play On Philly! and Live Connections to present a student-produced original work at World Café Live as part of their Classic Alive! Series in May.

Performance Exchange with Spoke the Hub Modern Dance Ensemble from Brooklyn – Dancers from the Brooklyn-based studio will visit Philadelphia and participate in our March concert. PYB dancers will travel to Brooklyn for the weekend to perform at the end of April in their Young Artists’ Workshop.

Annual Spring Showcase

Each June, PYB presents excerpts from classical story ballets as part of the Philadelphia Dance Academy Spring Showcase.
